We provide child care training for infant, toddler, and preschool teachers across Virginia — so you can meet your Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) licensing requirements and annual training hours with strategies you'll actually use.

Annual Training Requirements

  • Virginia child care providers must complete annual and pre-service training to remain in compliance with the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), Office of Child Care Health and Safety, the state agency that has regulated child care licensing since 2021 (formerly the Department of Social Services, or DSS).

  • Bridging Child Development is an IACET Accredited Provider, which means eligible courses award CEUs that meet nationally recognized continuing education standards. Because Virginia does not formally pre-approve individual courses, acceptance is determined by your program, check with your licensor to confirm our trainings meet your needs. Your certificate documents your CEUs for your VDOE licensing file.

Breakdown of Hours

16 clock hours of training are required annually for all staff in licensed child day centers and family day homes, in areas relevant to their job responsibilities.

This 16-hour requirement applies across a range of program types and roles:

- Licensed Child Day Centers — Program directors, teachers, assistants, aides, and substitutes

- Licensed Family Day Homes — Providers and family day home caregivers

- School-Age Programs — Staff in licensed school-age and after-school programs

- Family Day Systems — Providers operating under a licensed family day system

Virginia Quality

VQB5 (Virginia Quality Birth to Five) is the state's official measurement and improvement system for early childhood programs. Managed by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), it evaluates infant, toddler, and preschool classrooms in child care centers, family day homes, Head Starts, and public schools.

Virginia Child Care Association (VCCA)

The Virginia Child Care Association (VCCA) is a statewide nonprofit membership organization that supports privately owned child care programs, directors, and educators across Virginia. VCCA works alongside Virginia's early childhood community to promote high-quality child care and support the professionals who provide it.
